But even with all that experience, something still bothered me.
The win rates on opening range breakouts were embarrassing. Depending on the instrument and data period, overnight range breaks, ORB5 and ORB15 were coming in anywhere between 32% and 54%. The profits on the winners made up for it - but those numbers always depressed me. I was still relying on being right about direction. I still had to catch the move. I still had to time the entry. One bad run and the week was gone.
Then two things changed everything.
First - I had access to proper backtesting data and could actually run the numbers. And the numbers said: wait 5 more minutes. Just 5 minutes. Moving from ORB15 to ORB20 pushed win rates consistently above 72%. Not occasionally. Consistently. That wasn't a tweak. That was a different system.
Second - post-2022, the liquidity on SPX 0-DTE options reached a point where it was, frankly, rude not to trade them.
