Democrats won both chambers overnight. December Nasdaq 100 futures fell 2.44% and recovered it. Spot gold rose 2.45%, mostly after 05:00 UTC, whilst the dollar index fell 0.47%.
⚓ Weathervane. The wind is coming from the long end. The policy rate has been frozen for most of the year whilst the term premium does the tightening, and the price of long money is set by deficits, issuance supply and a synchronised global duration bid rather than by the committee. Higher-for-longer stopped being a Fed decision and became a bond-market fact. The cruise ship is holding this heading.
Ahoy there, Trader! ⚓️
It’s Phil…
Why did gold rise 2.5% overnight while the Nasdaq futures recovered their fall?
The first polls closed at 23:00 UTC, the minute US futures reopened. December Nasdaq 100 futures, settled at 28,305.75, fell to an overnight low of 27,615.75 in the 03:00 UTC hour, 2.44% lower. NBC projected the Senate by 04:27 UTC and AP’s Senate story went out at 04:40 UTC; AP called the House at 06:26 UTC. By 08:20 UTC the contract was 0.18% above settlement, and by the 10:00 UTC bar 0.98%.
Spot gold did something else. It closed Tuesday at 3,929.76 and stood at 4,026.07 at 07:45 UTC, up 2.45%. It was 3,951.82 at 05:00 UTC, so 77% of the rise came after that hour, while stock futures recovered.
The textbook has a clean account of a haven. Fear arrives, money runs to gold and Treasuries, and when the fear passes the haven gives the gain back. On that account gold should have peaked near 03:00 UTC with the futures’ low, and drifted lower after. It did the reverse: it was flat while stocks fell and rose while they recovered.
The dollar index fell 0.47% and the yen firmed 0.38%. A weaker dollar lifts gold, and gold rose more than five times as far as the dollar fell. This book holds no measure of gold’s sensitivity to the dollar, so that ratio is a comparison, not a split.
Here is the number worth putting beside the others. At 08:20 UTC, Nasdaq 100 futures stood 0.18% above Tuesday’s settlement and spot gold 2.61% above Tuesday’s close. Two markets came through one night about 2.4 percentage points apart on whether it mattered.
Labelled speculation. The Senate story, stamped by 04:40 UTC, is one candidate early enough to sit in front of most of gold’s move. Others are too: Trump’s “locked and loaded” remark on Iran at 02:00 UTC and the Texas governor’s concession at about 04:00 UTC. The market’s own explanations, regulation risk for AI and data centres, and gridlock that slows spending and favours bonds, were first stamped from 04:07 UTC. None of these is a retrieved cause. They are candidates placed against a clock.
What would settle it is the cash session and the rest of the week. If spot gold closes Friday, after payrolls, above 3,951.82, its 05:00 UTC level, it was pricing something stock futures chose to ignore. If it closes Friday below that level, the rise was an overnight trade in a thin market.
Phil’s Musing
I would have bet that a night like that ends with gold up at 3am and down by breakfast. It was the other way round. I do not know yet whether gold read the result better than stocks, or whether stocks simply had more practice at pretending.
Happy trading,
Phil
Less Brain, More Gain
…and may your trades be smoother than a cashmere codpiece
P.S. – Phil’s Footnote I had gold filed as the thing you buy when you are frightened. Last night it bought itself after everyone had calmed down. That filing system needs a new drawer.

Overnight Excitement
Fires. Dec NQ overnight low 27,615.75 in the 03:00 UTC hour, -2.438% against the 28,305.75 settlement, over the 2.0% spine-candidate line; Dec ES low 7,490, -1.405%. The §8.3 board
Effects without causes
- Dec NQ -2.438% to the low, then the recovery. Candidates: poll closings from 23:00 UTC (scheduled); Georgia call about 01:00 UTC; Benzinga “early Senate wins” 02:00:58 UTC; NBC Senate projection by 04:27 UTC; AP Senate story 04:40:42 UTC; AP House call 06:26 UTC. Clock: NQ fell 0.62% in the 00:00 UTC hour before any stamped call; half of the fall to the low was reached by the 02:00 UTC close (-1.566%). The Georgia call (about 01:00 UTC, approximate stamp, a hold) precedes 77.4% of the fall to the low (NQ 28,149.75 at 01:00 UTC); 0.62% fell before any stamped call. Disposition: labelled speculation, published; no named cause. The recovery: half of the low-to-capture rebound was in by about 05:00 UTC; the Senate stamps are upper bounds, so the order cannot be fixed to the minute. Coincidence.
- Spot gold +2.451%. 77.1% of the rise came after 05:00 UTC (3,951.82 at 05:00 UTC, 3,934.26 at 04:00 UTC). AP Senate story 04:40:42 UTC and NBC by 04:27 UTC precede it. Disposition: labelled speculation in AVE, Snippet and Macro Edge. Not a retrieved cause.
- Gartner -13.19% and Fiserv +12.46%: no cause held for either. Refusals, named in AVE.
Causes without effects
- Trump to the FT, “locked and loaded if we need to go” on Iran, 02:00:58 UTC: December WTI 96.09 settle, 96.31 at the capture. Loud, moved crude nothing measurable. Named in AVE as a rival gold candidate (coincidence).
- AI and data-centre regulation narrative, 05:42 UTC: stamped after the NQ low and during the recovery. A cause offered for a fall that was already reversing.
Stamped cause, scoped: AMD results 21:15 UTC for AMD shares only, +5.02% after hours (tier 3, two write-ups 5.02% and 5.26%, no quote times).
The refusal, with its search
- Routes checked: AP calls via PBS, Epoch Times, Spectrum and GV Wire syndication; TradingView news and stories; the overnight data calendar.
- Stamps found: Georgia about 01:00 UTC; NBC Senate by 04:27 UTC; AP Senate 04:40:42 UTC; AP House 06:26 UTC; narrative headlines 05:42 UTC.
- Test run against the locked reads: the 00:00 UTC hour fell before any stamped call, half the fall was in by 02:00 UTC, and the Georgia call precedes 77.4% of the fall but its stamp is approximate and the race a hold, and the low preceded every Senate stamp. The index move has no named cause; the early results are labelled speculation.
Forward catalyst slate
- Today: ADP 13:15 UTC, trade balance 13:30 UTC, ISM services 15:00 UTC, EIA crude 15:30 UTC. Quarterly refunding: time not confirmed on any route; nothing published.

- Fri: payrolls 13:30 UTC; Bowman 17:15 UTC on supervision.

- Uncalled at the election lane’s last read (05:44 UTC): Alaska, Minnesota and NY-17.
Divergence flags
- Index up, floor down: SPX +0.36% with NYSE A/D 1,012/1,666 and up/down volume 0.602; Nasdaq all-listed issues 2,547/2,295 (a wider universe than the index).
- Gold +2.451% against DXY -0.474%: gold moved 5.2 times the dollar.
- Front end turned up again: 2-year 4.56, 4.59, 4.61.
Regime and sensitivity
Weathervane carried. Turn condition 0 of 2, no dated Fed communication with policy content. Sensitivity running LOOSE, stated openly, fifty-fourth edition. Candidate 8 (vol curve) silent at 0.979.
