Memory up twelve percent. Alphabet down three cumulative. Same story, both sides.
Ahoy there, Trader! ⚓️
It’s Phil…
Vendors got paid before the customers did Memory names booked 12% Tuesday. Alphabet gave back another 1.4% pre-print. Twelve hours to the confession.
Wall Street decided Tuesday that the AI capex bill is a rally for whoever writes the invoice. Micron booked 12.17%, Sandisk 14.27%, Applied Materials and Marvell 8% each, Nvidia a modest 2%. Alphabet, which does the buying, closed down 1.4% and shed another 1.4% by 5 AM Wednesday. Same story, opposite prices, one session apart.
Wednesday post-close, three of that story’s authors take the microphone at once. Alphabet, Tesla, and IBM all report inside the same hour. Options price a 5.91% move on Tesla, worth roughly $83 billion in market cap, and a 5.44% move on IBM, still nursing last week’s -25.8% pre-announcement bruise. Consensus wants $2.89 from Google, $0.44 from Tesla, $3.02 from Big Blue. Consensus, having considered the tape, has been quietly rewritten by the tape.
Overnight, US forces completed an 11th consecutive night of strikes on Iran. Brent snapped to $94.23. Rubio, at ASEAN, said Tehran’s Hormuz claim sets a very dangerous precedent, which is diplomatic English for “we are still bombing.” Defence Secretary Hegseth confirmed the war has now cost $37.5 billion, which is one and a half Alphabet quarters.
The vendors have been paid. The customers pick up the tab at four.
The One That Mattered
Micron 12.17%. Alphabet -1.4%. Same tape, same day, same story.
The chipflation trade has been the ledger’s live thread since IBM’s shareholder letter, and Tuesday it decided to price both sides at once. Vendors took the rally. Alphabet took the discount, and shed another 1.4% overnight while Rubio told ASEAN Iran does not get to control Hormuz. Twelve hours to Alphabet’s 2027 capex guide. Twelve hours to Tesla and IBM. Micron already voted. So did Brent, at $94.
Can the same AI capex confession be a rally for the vendors and a bill for the customers on the same tape? We went down that rabbit hole in today’s Macro Edge. [Read it here →]

📌 Fun Fact
The Day The BBC Ran Out Of News
The most famous instance of “no news” occurred on Good Friday, April 18, 1930, when the BBC News broadcast an announcer reading the script:
“Good evening. Today is Good Friday. There is no news.”
The network then played 15 minutes of piano music instead of the standard broadcast.
In reality, major events were happening globally, such as a rebellion in India and a devastating fire in Romania, but due to holiday schedules and cut communication lines, the BBC was unaware and chose not to broadcast filler.
Some days, there just is no news.
