The cleanest quarter in five years, sold in one session
Ahoy there, Trader! ⚓️
It’s Phil…
Alphabet posted the sharpest Google numbers since 2021. Cloud +82%. Search +17%. Ad +10%. EPS beat by fifteen cents. And free cash flow turned negative $5.9 billion for the first time in the company’s public history.
Wall Street sold $180 billion of GOOGL cap on the print. Tesla -12.6%, Amazon -4.6% (about $120B gone), Meta -3.36%, Microsoft -2.24% caught the same knife. Total across seven names: $797 billion. Biggest one-day Mag7 loss since April 2025. Google’s best quarter in five years cost its peers $53 for every $1 of extra 2026 guide.
The trigger was a footnote. Alphabet raised 2026 capex $180-190B to $195-205B and flagged 2027 higher. CFO Ashkenazi named “supply-constrained” for the third consecutive quarter, the number she is now paid to say out loud.
Nasdaq Composite -2.15% to 25,138. S&P 500 -1.21% to 7,408. Oil settled above $100 for the first time since May, the 10-year cleared 4.71%, September hike odds firmed to 78%. Every macro dial ticked hawkish while the Mag7 wrote the cheque.
Intel raised its own capex $2 billion after the close and popped 12%. Same word, opposite reaction. Meta prints Wednesday.
The One That Mattered
Google beat everything and got sold $180 billion. The rest of the Mag7 handed back $617 billion in sympathy. What did the damage was one line of guidance: a $15 billion raise to 2026 capex, and a “goes higher” flag on 2027, priced at $53 per dollar of extra guide. Half an hour later Intel raised its own capex $2 billion and got paid 12% for it. Same word, opposite reception.
The market answered it twice on the same tape. When does capex reward and when does capex punish? We went down that rabbit hole in today’s Macro Edge. [link]
