Brent printed the cycle high, the front end moved 2 points the wrong way, and CPI lands at 08:30.
Ahoy there, Trader! ⚓️
It’s Phil…
The Barrel Got to $90 and Nobody Answered Brent printed the cycle high, 6 people died at sea, and the Fed path moved 2 points the wrong way.
Brent traded at $90.03 on Tuesday. That is the number this desk has spent 6 sessions waiting for, and it arrived as advertised: nothing signed, no new strike on anybody. Just the slow realisation that a strait shut since February is still, remarkably, shut.
Then the front end did nothing. CME FedWatch has September at 49.9% for a hike against 50.1% for a hold, roughly 2 points below Monday. On Monday a 5% crude session bought 10 points of hike pricing. On Tuesday crude went further and bought nothing. Same input, larger dose, no response.
Equities arranged themselves into an unusually tidy joke. The S&P 500 fell 0.32%. The Russell 2000 rose 0.32%. Alphabet dropped 3.61% whilst 1,256 small caps went up. That is not a market forming a view. That is megacap tech buying insurance whilst everybody else declines to pay.
And 6 people were killed in the Bab el-Mandeb when 3 missiles hit a food ship and a 4th hit the rescue boats. Crude surrendered its high in the same session.
July CPI prints at 08:30. If a barrel at $90 could not move September, we are about to find out what can.
The One That Mattered
$90.03. Six sessions of this desk insisting the premium would return with nothing signed, and Tuesday settled up to the tick. Brent hit the number on the pure absence of an agreement, the cleanest version of the mechanism in 29 cycles. Then it handed the high straight back on the one day people were actually killed at sea. Non-events price. Events do not. Meanwhile the front end, which paid 10 points for Monday’s oil, paid nothing for a larger move on Tuesday. The line ran Monday and was dead by Tuesday.
Which leaves the bit we will not settle here. If Brent at $90 could not move September pricing, what is left for CPI to move?

Sector rotation:
Energy led a third session. Alphabet fell 3.61% and dragged the Nasdaq Composite down 0.60% whilst 1,256 Russell constituents advanced. On Holding recorded its worst day ever, down more than 20%, establishing that a shoe company can still be judged on revenue. Plug Power added 13.3%.

Saylor Sold Again, Then Clarified Whose Wallet It Was Fourth sale of the year, 6,948 coins, and a definition of “never” carrying an exemption clause.
Price snapshot:
Bitcoin $63,759.56 early Wednesday, up 0.36%, after sliding Tuesday to $63,394. A rally past $64,400 lasted 3 hours. Ether near $1,878. Sunday’s $65,416 high has gone. That reclaim was always a rate trade, since repossessed.
Flows & positioning:
US spot bitcoin ETFs took $853.5m in the week to 7 August, the best since April and nearly 5 times all of July. Ether funds added $244.9m for a 5th straight positive week. Coinglass counted $34.4m of long liquidations, which is what money arriving and price not moving looks like from inside.
Leadership & rotation:
Strategy sold 1,690 BTC for $108.6m at $64,262, spending every cent on 1,152,020 STRC preferred shares. Holdings 840,447, cost basis $75,385. That is the 4th disclosed sale of 2026 and 6,948 coins. Cryptoquant puts realised losses beyond $102m. Saylor, helpfully: “a public company, not my wallet.”
Catalysts & roadmap:
Bitfinex counts 1.79m coins bought between $62,000 and $65,000, a ceiling built from this year’s optimists. Hashdex liquidates its $14.7m spot bitcoin ETF on 17 August. Polymarket prices CLARITY passing in 2026 at 21%, the Senate unavailable for comment until mid-September.

TL;DR – The Bottom Line
- Brent hit $90.03 with nothing signed and no new strike, exactly as the mechanism said it would, then surrendered the high on the day 6 people actually died at sea.
- Monday’s 5% crude session bought 10 points of September hike pricing. Tuesday’s larger move bought minus 2. The transmission line worked for precisely 1 session.
- The S&P 500 fell 0.32% and the Russell 2000 rose 0.32%, a mirror so tidy it looks staged. Alphabet dropped 3.61% and 1,256 small caps did not care.
- CoreWeave disclosed a $104bn backlog against a $48.1bn market value and rose 12%. Super Micro beat guidance by roughly $3bn, which says more about consensus.
- Strategy sold 1,690 more coins, its 4th of the year, taking 2026 sales to 6,948. Saylor clarified that “never sell” applies to him personally, not the company.
📌 Fun Fact
The ETF Nobody Turned Up For A $56 billion category could not spare $15 million for one fund.
US spot bitcoin ETFs have gathered more than $56 billion since launching in January 2024. Hashdex is shutting its own after 2 years and $14.7 million, which is a rounding error inside its own category.
