4,339 stocks rose, 9 of 11 sectors rose, and the 2-year priced money 5 basis points dearer
Ahoy there, Trader! ⚓️
It’s Phil…
A Rocket Company Became a Phone Company The market had a lovely Friday. The telephone did not.
Friday was, by nearly every measure in this letter, a good day. The S&P 500 added 0.594692%. Nine of eleven sector proxies rose. Advancers led on both exchanges at once, 1,488 to 1,197 and 2,851 to 2,020, which Thursday’s tape had conspicuously failed to arrange. Combined, 4,339 stocks rose against 3,217 that fell, a margin of 1,122 against minus fifty the session before and the broadest since 2 October. The volatility index went to 14.84 and had a lie down.
Underneath it, three companies that sell telephone service to most of America each lost more than a tenth of their value. T-Mobile 13.268344%. AT&T 10.816244%. Verizon 10.140237%. The cause was a spectrum deal letting SpaceX expand its Starlink mobile service, carried by Reuters at 11:36 UTC, which is one hour and fifty-three minutes before the market opened.
So nobody traded it. They arrived to it. Of T-Mobile’s 22.73-point fall, 15.80 points were already gone in the opening gap and the whole session managed another 6.93. AT&T was worse: 92.565056% of its decline was in the gap. The market did not reprice the telephone. It woke up and found it repriced.
The One That Mattered
Friday was the broadest tape since 2 October. 4,339 stocks rose, nine of eleven sectors rose, and volatility settled at 14.84. The market was delighted. The consumer, asked the same morning, answered 46.3, down from 48.1. And the only part of the curve doing any real work priced money five basis points dearer, whilst the 30-year sat perfectly still at 5.60%. Three readings of one Friday, and the cheerful one is the only one anybody actually traded. So here is the question. Why did soft consumer data make the front end more expensive? We went down the rabbit hole in today’s Macro Edge.

69.5% of the Damage Happened While Everyone Was Asleep The auction did the work. The session did the tidying up.
Premarket snapshot:
The 07:30 UK capture, which is the 06:30 to 06:34:59 UTC bar read twice to be sure it had stopped moving, puts December ES at 7,879.00, up 0.244919% on its own Friday close of 7,859.75. NQ is up 0.228232%, YM 0.283095%, RTY 0.209064%. The largest thing the overnight managed was NQ reaching 0.580223% above Friday, which is 0.419777 percentage points short of being interesting and 0.019777 short of being worth a sentence.
Sector rotation:
Real estate led at 1.860465%, healthcare 1.57588%, discretionary 1.0205%, financials 0.921999%. Technology came sixth of eleven at 0.505612%, eight ten-thousandths of a point ahead of industrials. Only energy and communication services fell, at 0.245248% and 1.507986%. These are exchange-traded fund proxies, not the cap-weighted indices, because that route died on 1 October and we have not pretended otherwise since.
Earnings or guidance:
Monday has no major reporter. And somebody will tell you today that Friday was the worst session in T-Mobile’s history. A retail post called it exactly that, the worst on record; a second called Friday AT&T’s worst day since 2000. Different companies, so they do not even contradict each other, which is worse than if they did. We hold two of T-Mobile’s closing prices. The field that settles its claim is a dated series of daily returns back to the 2013 listing, and nobody has run it, so we are giving you 13.268344% and refusing to rank it.
Cross-asset nuance:
The 2-year took 5 basis points, the 3-year 4, the 5-year 3, the 7-year and 10-year 2 each, the 20-year 1, and the 30-year took nothing whatsoever. A tidy little staircase. The bills, meanwhile, went the other way by a basis point, which is the part of the curve nobody built a story about. The dollar firmed 0.115557% to 102.232 and our six-leg rebuild reproduced it to within 0.000685 of a percentage point, which is reassuring and proves nothing about anybody’s economy.
Crypto Market Edge
9 Sessions of Ether Outflows and the Price Went Up Anyway The funds are leaving. The coin declined to notice.
Price snapshot:
Bitcoin closed the 9 October UTC mark at 82,567.30, up 1.0478%, and by 06:25 UTC this morning it was 83,675.79, which is above the number in the paragraph you are reading. Ether closed 2,485.75, up 0.4952%. Two routes agreed to 0.02736% and 0.02092% respectively. Friday was not the crypto drawdown. The 7th and 8th were.
Flows and positioning:
Bitcoin funds took in 21.1 million dollars, which after minus 484.9 and minus 244.1 on the two preceding sessions is less a recovery than a pause for breath. IBIT did 22.4 of it, HODL 2.3, FBTC handed back 3.6, and the other nine issuers printed a flat zero each. Ether funds lost 56.1 million, a ninth consecutive negative session running back to 29 September, cumulatively 697.4 million, and BlackRock’s ETHA was the whole of Friday’s figure on its own.
Leadership and rotation:
Strategy closed 154.34, up 1.894765% against bitcoin’s 1.0478%. Its sentiment score fell from a prior capture’s 35 to 28 whilst its message volume sat unmoved at 45 and its watcher base rose by fourteen to 83,464. Attention and price continue to hold entirely separate meetings.
Catalysts and roadmap:
The 6 October ether row is still minus 201.9 with ten issuer cells at zero, which is precisely the shape a prior session wore before it restated. It stays provisional and unmarked for a third edition. Three bills auction Tuesday, the bond market being shut today. September inflation lands Wednesday and Thursday.
TL;DR
- Friday was broad and cheerful. The S&P 500 took 0.594692%, nine of eleven sectors rose, and 4,339 stocks beat 3,217 on the combined tape.
- Three phone companies each lost over 10%. T-Mobile 13.268344%, AT&T 10.816244%, Verizon 10.140237%, on a SpaceX spectrum deal nobody got to trade.
- Of T-Mobile’s 22.73 points, 15.80 went in the gap and 6.93 in the session. For AT&T the gap was 92.565056% of the whole thing.
- The 2-year took 5 basis points and the 30-year took 0, with a neat staircase between them, on the morning sentiment printed 46.3.
- Ether funds posted a ninth straight outflow at 56.1 million whilst ether itself rose 0.4952%. Somebody is wrong and it is not settled yet.
Fun Fact
Japan Is Shut Today for an Opening Ceremony One afternoon in 1964 still closes Tokyo every October
Tokyo did not trade today. Japan keeps Sports Day, a national holiday created to commemorate the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics on 10 October that year. It later shifted to the second Monday in October, which is how it ended up permanently sharing a date with a shut American bond market.
