87.8% of Monday’s Gain Was Already Done at 09:29

The exchange opened, the work was finished, and 85 issues made new lows anyway

Ahoy there, Trader! ‍‍⚓️

It’s Phil…

Monday’s Work Was Finished Before Monday Opened 87.760278% of it, to be precise, and nobody will say by whom

The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.112670% on Monday. It did 87.760278% of that before the bell, gapping 255.2527 points and then taking six and a half hours to add 35.5995 more. The S&P 500 managed the same trick less gracefully, gapping 43.33 points and handing back 12.04 of them. Four of the five headline indices gave ground inside the cash session. Only the Composite added to its gap, and it added an eighth.

87.760278% of the Composite’s gain has no named cause in this book, and nor does the 12.239722% that followed it. That admission covers the Composite and nothing else: the S&P’s gap and give-back, the 2.013741% fall in utilities, the 7.75388% fall in volatility, November crude’s 2.218716% and ether’s inversion against bitcoin are all published here with no trigger stated and no admission naming them. The only US release with a tier-1 timestamp landed at 10:00 ET, half an hour after the open and long after the gap. Somebody will tell you this morning what the 2-year yield did yesterday. We cannot: the CMT file, the Fed’s own H.15 and the Treasury auctions API are all a session behind, on three cache-busted reads. One field would settle it and nobody has it, so we publish no 19 October yield at all. Less satisfying than a number, and the refusal is the only thing we can honestly claim here.

Underneath the gap, the tape voted against it. NYSE advancers lost 923 to 1,756. New lows more than doubled to 85 and new highs halved to 30.

The One That Mattered

The number is 87.760278%, the share of the Composite’s gain already on the board when the bell rang. Which makes Monday’s cash session a six-and-a-half-hour formality that added an eighth. The tape, invited to ratify the overnight verdict, sent 1,756 NYSE issues lower against 923 higher and printed 85 new lows against 30 new highs. One of those is about Monday. Which of them is about the week is the thing we cannot yet tell you.

Should an index be able to rise whilst more issues fall than rise, and which of the two is telling us about tomorrow?

Stock Market Edge

The Index Rose. 1,756 Issues Did Not. A rally held up by a gap and three sectors out of eleven

Premarket snapshot:

From the 06:30 to 06:35 UTC bar, 07:30 UK, read twice and byte-identical across all four December contracts. December ES 7,740.50, up 0.077575% on Monday’s 7,734.50 settlement; December NQ 29,655.00, down 0.227101%; December YM 52,330, up 0.283623%. Nothing troubles 0.3%, which is as close to an opinion as the overnight tape offered.

Sector rotation:

Three of eleven SPDR proxies rose. Consumer discretionary took 1.778410% and technology 1.357170%; utilities finished 2.013741% lower. The spread narrowed to 3.792151 points from 5.547454, and energy, which led on Friday on this same proxy set, came eighth of eleven.

Earnings or guidance:

Cleveland-Cliffs closed 16.336634% higher, having reported $0.26 GAAP on $5.6bn of revenue and then guided 2027 EBITDA above $4bn. The quarter was fine. The guide was the larger number, and which of the two the buyers were reading is not something this book can tell you. Fifth Third printed $0.90 GAAP against $1.13 adjusted, and since nobody states which basis the consensus used, we are not calling it a beat.

Cross-asset nuance:

Volatility fell 7.75388% to 18.44 against a three-month at 19.60, deepening contango to a 0.940816 ratio. Bond volatility went the other way, up 0.19513%. Credit split cleanly: investment grade cheapened by 3.30bp, high yield richened by 3.66bp, and two routes agree on both signs, a session apart from the prices.

One Fund Out-Bought the Whole Complex And bitcoin, duly flattered, fell 0.215075%

Price snapshot:

Bitcoin closed 81,836.90, down 0.215075%. Ether closed 2,405.10, down 0.100518%, with its bar open sitting exactly on the prior close, which is tidier than this series usually manages. Two independent feeds agree on both to within a thousandth of a per cent.

Flows and positioning:

US spot bitcoin funds netted $526.7m. IBIT supplied $665.2m of that, which is more than the complex netted, against $83.6m leaving FBTC and $54.9m leaving GBTC. Nine of twelve issuer columns printed a genuine zero. Ether, meanwhile, lost $103.3m on its fourth consecutive outflow, $95.4m from ETHA alone.

Leadership and rotation:

Ether fell 0.467365 times bitcoin’s magnitude. The tracked ratio has run 1.269, then 1.016055, now 0.467365, which is its first reading below 1.000. Three observations is not a regime and we are not calling one.

Catalysts and roadmap:

Nobody is talking about any of it. Bitcoin sits outside the Stocktwits crypto top 25, canonical sentiment 22 on 684,357 watchers, message volume low. The loudest name on all three boards is a neocloud that fell.

TL;DR

  • The Composite rose 1.112670% and 87.760278% of it was an opening gap, leaving the cash session to supply an eighth of a move nobody can account for.
  • NYSE decliners beat advancers 1,756 to 923, new lows doubled to 85 and new highs halved to 30, on a session every headline index except the Dow finished higher.
  • Cleveland-Cliffs added 16.336634% on 4.882664 times normal volume, by guiding 2027 EBITDA above $4bn rather than on the quarter it had just reported.
  • Bitcoin funds netted $526.7m with IBIT alone supplying $665.2m, whilst ether logged a fourth consecutive outflow session at $103.3m and fell less than bitcoin did.
  • Housing starts and building permits print 08:30 ET, state employment 10:00 ET, and a $13bn 20-year reopening prices tomorrow onto the curve’s highest tenor.

Fun Fact

The Index Nobody Can Attribute A missing divisor, 46th of 49

The Dow is price-weighted and its divisor is published on no route this desk can reach, so no honest claim about which name carried a Dow session is ever possible here. On Monday it moved 0.069958%, the 46th largest of 49 held sessions, so there was mercifully nothing to attribute.
