Bought On A Rumour, Sold On A Spreadsheet

The tape paid up for an agreement that does not exist, then fled two beats that do.

Ahoy there, Trader! ‍‍⚓️

It’s Phil…

Ten Points, No Signature The market repriced the Federal Reserve on a sentence about a waterway.

The Federal Reserve held rates on 29 July after a 9-3 vote, three public dissents and a chairman who declined to explain himself. September hike pricing moved three points. On Tuesday the US Treasury Secretary, who does not sit on the committee and does not vote, told CNBC that a Hormuz deal could happen “today or tomorrow”. September pricing fell ten points, from 67% to 57%.

Brent dropped over 5% to $79.50, its first look below $80 since 13 July. The curve went with it. Two-year 4.21%, ten-year 4.63%, thirty-year 5.20%, against Friday’s 4.28%, 4.75% and 5.27%. Equities pocketed the cheaper discount rate and booked the first record since June: 7,736.52, up 1.79%, with the Dow clearing 54,000 for the first time.

Nothing was signed. Rubio said progress, no agreement. Iran denies talking to Washington at all and says the only live conversation is with Oman. The strait is exactly where it was on Monday. Twenty-four times now the barrel has repriced this waterway on somebody’s remark, and the waterway has yet to offer an opinion of its own.

Then the bell rang, two companies beat every line they had, and the tape docked them eight percent each.

The One That Mattered

Ten points. Not the record, not Palantir’s 29%, not the Dow’s first 54,000 handle. Ten points off the September path, delivered by a cabinet official describing a document nobody has seen, about a negotiation one of the two parties denies having. The July meeting had dissents, a vote and a press conference, and moved the number by three. A press appearance moved it by ten. The Fed’s reaction function now runs through the barrel, and the barrel runs through whoever reaches a microphone first. An efficient discovery and a deranged one. ADP prints at 08:15, payrolls Friday. If one sentence can move September pricing ten points, what is a data print actually worth?

We went down that particular hole in today’s Macro Edge.

Records At Four, Two Beats Gone By Five The cash session priced a rumour. The evening session priced two cash flow statements.

Premarket snapshot:
ES 7,791.75 (+0.34%) against 7,736.52. NQ 29,900.50 (+0.12%) is the laggard, which is where the after-hours damage went to hide. Gold futures added 1.72%, five times the equity futures. A strange way for a risk rally to breathe. VIX 16.04.

Sector rotation:
Technology took 4%, industrials and materials near 2% each, financials 0.9%. Five of eleven sectors still finished lower on a day the index printed an all-time high, the sort of detail a record buries well.

Earnings or guidance:
Palantir closed up 29.45% on revenue of $1.94bn, up 93%, Karp noting it “does not get paid for clicks or tokens or chats”. Caterpillar took 5.6% on its first $20bn quarter. SpaceX beat revenue by $880m and EBITDA by $1.5bn, disclosed $18.37bn of quarterly capex against $7.81bn of revenue, and lost 8.56%. AMD beat and lost 8%. The market has started reading the third statement.

Cross-asset nuance:
The ten-year fell 12bp whilst the thirty-year fell 7bp, widening that spread to 57bp from 52bp. The policy path took the good news; the long end took less. Amazon fell over 2% because Bezos filed to sell $4.1bn of stock one session after the company cleared $3tn.

Bitcoin Naps Through A Dovish Repricing Ten points came off the Fed path and the debasement hedge managed 0.07%.

Price snapshot:
BTC $64,002.84 (-0.07%) at 03:41 ET, near $64,000 through Asian hours, holding the $63,000 it surrendered on Monday. Ether sits near $1,880. On a session that moved crude 5% and gold 1.72%, the asset marketed as the answer to monetary policy declined to have an opinion about it.

Flows & positioning:
Spot bitcoin funds shed $61.53m on the week whilst ether products drew $27.42m. That is rotation rather than exit, though not an especially flattering one. Bitcoin ETFs remain roughly $3.3bn lighter across 2026, and BlackRock’s ETHA is doing all of the ether category’s work by itself.

Leadership & rotation:
Ether is the only large token still lower across seven days, according to CoinDesk, whilst simultaneously being the one taking the money. Bitcoin ETF assets sit at $76.22bn against ether’s $9.72bn, a gap a few good weeks does not close.

Catalysts & roadmap:
Strategy’s count holds at three, 5,226 coins, holdings 842,138, a fifth straight week without a purchase. The man who said never sold at $11,462 a coin below cost to pay a dividend on the instrument he built to buy coins. ADP 08:15 ET, ISM services 10:00 ET, payrolls Friday.

TL;DR – The Bottom Line

  • Bessent said a Hormuz deal could land “today or tomorrow” and September hike pricing fell ten points to 57%. The July FOMC, with three dissents, moved it three.
  • Brent cracked $80 for the first time since 13 July, off more than 5% to $79.50. Iran denies direct talks with Washington. Nothing has been signed by anybody.
  • The S&P booked 7,736.52 (+1.79%), a first record since June, and the Dow cleared 54,000. Five of eleven sectors still closed lower on the day.
  • SpaceX beat every line and lost 8.56% on $18.37bn of quarterly capex against $7.81bn of revenue. AMD beat and lost 8%. The bell was the only thing that changed.
  • ADP at 08:15 ET against a 75,000 consensus, ISM services at 10:00 ET, Cook at 16:05 ET, payrolls Friday. Real numbers now have a rumour’s ten points to beat.

📌 Fun Fact

The Record Was Set By An Index With No Original Members

Twelve companies started the Dow in 1896. The survivor count is zero.

The Dow launched in May 1896 with twelve names, and none of them are in it now. General Electric hung on for 111 years and was dropped in June 2018, so the index that cleared 54,000 on Tuesday shares precisely nothing with the one that started the whole exercise.
