If 55% of Monday’s Volume Traded in Falling Shares, What Exactly Went Up?

The S&P 500 rose 0.7%, 736m NYSE shares traded in fallers, 125 Nasdaq stocks made a 1-year low, and the 6-month bill rose into a silent committee

⚓ Weathervane. The wind is coming from the long end. The policy rate has been frozen for most of the year whilst the term premium does the tightening, and the price of long money is set by deficits, issuance supply and a synchronised global duration bid rather than by the committee. Higher-for-longer stopped being a Fed decision and became a bond-market fact. The cruise ship is holding this heading.

Ahoy there, Trader! ‍‍⚓️

It’s Phil…

If 55% of Monday’s New York volume traded in falling shares, what exactly went up?

The textbook has a word for an index that rises whilst most of the volume trades in falling stocks. We are not going to use it, because it says who was doing what, and this letter holds no flow series.

Here is what it does hold. On Friday the exchange traded 737 million shares in stocks that fell and the S&P 500 fell 0.52%. On Monday it traded 736 million shares in stocks that fell and the S&P 500 rose 0.70%. Volume in risers rose by 134 million shares, from 443 million to 577 million, and 427 more issues rose. That is the difference on the tape, and it says nothing about who bought or sold.

The index and the exchange are a different list of companies. The S&P 500 is five hundred of them, weighted by size; the volume counts every issue listed in New York. The count of risers, 1,400 against 1,273, agreed with the index. The new-low tally did not: 50 to 43 in New York, 125 to 74 on the Nasdaq, on a day the Nasdaq 100 rose 1.09%. Three votes, one for the price.

70.23% of the Nasdaq 100’s rise and 69.82% of the S&P 500’s came after the open, and nothing stamped inside the session carries that leg. 70% of the move has no named cause in this book.

Speculation, not a cause

Speculation follows. None of it is a retrieved cause. The wires credit an Anthropic filing stamped 13:22 UTC, before the open. The clock lets it in. The size ties it to the gap and to nothing after it.

Behind it, the curve did something quieter. The 6-month bill rose 5 basis points, the 2-year fell 1, the 20-year and 30-year fell 2 each, two days before a committee silent since the 14th. Bills rising whilst the long end eases is a shape, not a message. Bond volatility fell 1.08%, equity volatility 5.45% to 18.39.

So the testable version. If the split is noise, on the next S&P 500 up day more than half of NYSE volume trades in rising issues. If it is a narrow advance, the next up day looks like Monday: index up, volume in fallers above half, new lows above new highs. Scored on the next two up days, in public.

Phil’s Musing

I have learned not to argue with a tape doing two things at once. The index said up, the volume said down, and both are right, because they measure different lists of companies. What I want on Wednesday is not the statement, it is whether the volume follows the index on the next green close.

Happy trading,
Phil
Less Brain, More Gain
…and may your trades be smoother than a cashmere codpiece

P.S. – Phils Footnote I spent Monday evening assuming the volume split would turn out to be a reporting artefact, the kind of thing that evaporates when you check the exchange’s own figures. It did not. The residual between up-volume plus down-volume and the total is 1.32%, the same as Friday’s 1.31%, and the Friday comparison is from the same feed. So the number is real, and I have no explanation for it that I am allowed to print. That is a less comfortable place to be than having a wrong one.

A harbour tide gauge reads up while the channel meter beside it shows most of the water marked as fallen, beneath a shuttered committee office.

🗂 Desk Notes – Part 237 | 27 Oct 2026

Raw briefing. Observations, not trades. Everything below is in lock_part237.json (395 figures, validate clean) unless it says otherwise.

Session read (§8.4)

SESSION BRIDGE: prior session (Mon 26 Oct) full reaction: December ES settled 7,714.50 against Friday’s 7,659.75, +0.715%; cash SPX +0.696%, NDX +1.091%, DJI +0.280%, RUT +0.379%; VIX 18.39, -5.45%; December WTI 101.76, -1.462%; live premarket ES -0.110% / NQ -0.367% on the 07:45 to 07:50Z bar, VIX +0.16% on the 07:15Z global-hours bar; threshold: none.

Threshold reasoning, every limb. ES prior session +0.715% is 0.285 points short of the 1.0% investigate band. VIX -5.45% is 2.55 points short of the 8% volatility leg. December WTI -1.46% is 2.54 points short of the 4% commodity leg. Premarket: the largest overnight move at the capture was NQ -0.367%, inside the 0.3 to 0.6% normal band; on the 08:20Z re-quote every contract was within 0.09% of settlement; ES, YM and RTY were already below the 0.3% floor at the capture and NQ joined them by the re-quote. Nothing fires.

§8.4.2 limbs. (a) Largest or second-largest daily move of the held window: no. NDX +1.09% is below its 22 Oct 2.90% and 14 Oct 2.02% falls, so at most third; SPX +0.70% and DJI +0.28% are smaller. (b) Sector spread 3.260 points, below 4.0. (c) No table constituent holds an own-bar move over 10%; FICO -11.1% is a midday wire figure at tier 3 and is not in the tables. The board ran anyway, as it does every edition.

Close-to-open window. Monday 20:00Z cash close to Tuesday 07:50Z capture. The after-hours leg carried five single-name prints (below) and index futures did not exceed the normal band.

Contract roll. Equity index and metals December; WTI December front by volume (247,766 against January’s 110,611); Brent January front by volume (301,708 against December’s 245,481) with December expiring Friday 30 Oct. Every Brent figure names its month. No equity roll until 18 Dec.

Capture record. 07:45 to 07:50Z bar, read 08:05:12Z and 08:12:02Z (ES, NQ) and 08:06:12Z and 08:12:58Z (YM, RTY); OHLCV byte-identical on all four; the adjacent 08:05Z bar mutated on all four between reads (ES close 7,711 to 7,707, volume 233 to 2,801). Quiet window 07:55Z to 08:05Z observed. Zero 429s across four lanes, one re-quote agent and the main thread. Fifth consecutive on-time four-contract capture.

Overnight Excitement (§8.5)

Does not fire. Largest overnight move NQ -0.367% at the capture, 0.633 points short of the 1.0% trigger and 0.233 short of the 0.6% band boundary; by the 08:20Z re-quote NQ was -0.085%. Tokyo and Seoul higher, Hong Kong and Shanghai lower on the AP wrap, no levels; TSE:7203 and SSE:600519 both printed a 27 Oct bar. USDJPY 157.76 at the re-quote. ECB decides Thursday 13:15Z (verified); BoJ 29 to 30 Oct not verified on any fetched source.

§8.3 candidate cause board

Effects without causes.

  • S&P 500 +0.696% with 69.82% of it intraday; Nasdaq 100 +1.091% with 70.23% intraday. No candidate stamped inside the cash session carries the leg. majority_unexplained true. The licensed sentence is in the letter, the Snippet and the excerpt.
  • NYSE down-volume 735.8m against up-volume 577.3m (55.29% share) on an up day; Friday’s down-volume 737.3m (61.63% share). New lows above new highs on both exchanges (50 to 43, 125 to 74). Published as the spine pair, with the universe mismatch disclosed under the anchor “a different list of companies” in all four reader files.
  • Dow +0.280% with 71.91% of it in the gap, the inverse split of SPX and NDX. Desk Notes only; no cause named.
  • XLV exactly unchanged, 179.28 on both sessions, on 7,821,148 shares. Published.
  • Silver: December settled 54.341, re-quoted 52.92 on the 08:25Z bar, -2.61%, nothing timestamped before it in the sampled feeds. Published as a refusal in the reader files; the drift gate flagged it and the copy carries both reads.
  • 08:00Z futures volume spike: ES 5,426 contracts on the European-open bar against 797 to 1,090 on the surrounding bars, ES 7,703.75 to 7,711 on the first read of the forming 08:05Z bar, then 7,707 on the second read at 08:12Z. Post-capture; no headline in the sampled feeds 07:50Z to 08:00Z. Desk Notes only.

Causes without effects.

  • Microsoft buyout headline, 16:49Z Reuters via TradingView, 17:56Z DJN: MSFT +1.54% against technology +1.69%. Coincidence, published.
  • Dallas Fed manufacturing 14:30Z: 13.4 against 9.8 prior; no visible index reaction and no intraday path held. Desk Notes only.
  • Brazil runoff: XP -48.4%, EWZ -21.7% (midday wires), Ibovespa reported -13%; the US index rose through it. Coincidence at index scope, scoped to Brazil, published.
  • Monday after-hours reporters, earliest wire stamps: Cadence 20:02Z, Whirlpool 20:05Z, Welltower 20:06Z, Amkor 20:08Z, Celestica 20:23Z, Nucor 20:30Z. Wire-reported extended-hours moves: Celestica +13.18%, Whirlpool -8.88%, Cadence +2.28%, Amkor +4.32%, Nucor flat. Offsetting single names; index futures inside the normal band. Desk Notes only. Nucor’s EPS is reported two different ways on two wires and is not published either way.

Candidates scoped to one instrument, and their disposition.

  • Anthropic S-1, earliest held stamp 13:22Z (TheStreet 09:22 ET), Zacks 13:41Z. Precedes the 13:30Z open. Can account for at most the gap: 30.18% of SPX, 29.77% of NDX. Published as labelled speculation in AVE, the Snippet and Macro Edge, never in Inside Edge; the majority test against the premarket contract’s locked reads (07:50Z capture, 08:25Z re-quote) is passed trivially since the stamp precedes both.
  • Tehran diplomacy wires: DJN 08:30Z, Benzinga 12:31Z, Barchart 19:31Z, DJN 19:55Z, TE 20:00Z and 23:40Z, DJN 01:15Z Tuesday. December WTI -1.46% on the trade date. No intraday crude path held, so the majority test cannot be run at crude scope. Published as a refusal.
  • Meta stock-offering plan: stamps held at 13:11Z (Schwab), 13:57Z (TheStreet) and 20:46Z (DJN); META -1.88% on 2.09 times Friday’s volume during the session. Refusal on the ground that no intraday META path is held, so the majority test cannot be run at single-name scope. The first draft refused it on a false ground (that the earliest stamp was after the close) and the figures limb corrected it against the lock’s own narratives block.
  • Tesla Barclays upgrade: only stamp held is the 17:09Z Benzinga midday wrap; TSLA +5.21% on 1.53 times volume. Refusal: no stamp before the move is held.
  • 2-year auction: fiscaldata returns no 26 Oct record on an equality filter or a gte filter; the 2-Year series on that route ends 22 Sep. No yield, cover, shares or tail published. Refusal, and the edition’s receipts beat.

Null rate (ruling S). No index-scope cause named this edition; one labelled speculation; four refusals; two coincidences. Four consecutive editions naming no index-scope cause.

Eight rose, three fell, three held, recomputed in code. 2s10s 32 (31), 2s30s 63 (64), 20s30s -4 (unchanged, 30-year minus 20-year, the ledger’s convention), 3m10y 78 (unchanged). The 20-year is the strict maximum of the fourteen for a 32nd consecutive session; the 14 sessions 6 to 26 Oct (12 Oct being the bond holiday) were re-verified in this fetch and the 18 from 10 Sep to 5 Oct are carried from the Part 236 lock. A DJN close wrap has the 2-year at 4.712%, up 3.2bp, against the CMT’s 4.68%, down 1; the copy rests on the CMT and the direction is route-dependent. Two cache-busted CMT fetches agreed, top row 10/26/2026, header asserted at 15 fields. H.15 carries 19 to 23 Oct only; all 11 overlapping tenors match.

What moved. The front of the curve rose into the meeting and the long end eased: four bills up 2 to 5 and two held, the 2-year down 1, the long bond down 2. Bills rising whilst the 2-year softens is a shape, not a cause, and no Fed communication exists inside the blackout to attribute it to. The relay has an October hold at 89.7% and a December hike at 78.3% (tier 3, direction only published). Equity vol fell 5.45% to 18.39, VIX3M 19.94, ratio 0.922 from 0.950, contango. Bond vol fell 1.08% to 102.20. Dollar +0.27% to 102.03 on all four legs held (dollar-yen +0.44%, euro -0.26%, sterling -0.22%, dollar-franc +0.32%) with the US 2-year down 1bp, so not US-rate-led. Credit: HYG +0.19%, LQD +0.16%, TLT +0.42% on durations 3.17, 7.63 and 14.96. Gold spot +0.56% to 4,016.52, December +0.76% to 4,038.4; copper +0.53%.

The one artery. There is not one. Equities rose on a volume split that pointed down, the curve rose at the front and eased at the back with nobody speaking, vol fell, the dollar rose, oil fell. Nothing in the lock joins two of those with a stamp. The spine is the equity-versus-volume relationship because it is the one relationship this book can state at full strength from figures it holds.

Textbook versus tape, for Macro Edge. The textbook says an up day on which most volume trades in decliners is distribution. This book holds no flow series and no constituent decomposition, so it cannot say that and does not. What it can say: volume in falling issues was 737m on Friday’s down day and 736m on Monday’s up day, volume in rising issues was 134m higher, Friday’s count was 973 up to 1,691 down and Monday’s 1,400 to 1,273; the count agreed with the index and the new-low tally did not.

Enumeration of locked single-name moves (R8)

Above 5% on an own bar: TSLA +5.21% (refusal, in the letter). Wire-only above 10%: XP -48.4%, EWZ -21.7%, FICO -11.1%, RRC +18% (coincidence rows or unpublished; FICO and RRC not in the tables, named here). After-hours wires: CLS +13.18%, WHR -8.88% (Desk Notes and Inside Edge). Between 1% and 5% on own bars: LRCX +3.22%, NVDA +2.39%, MSFT +1.54%, META -1.88%, GOOGL -1.06% (all published). AXP +0.58% on 0.84 times volume (ledger only).

Capture-to-publish re-quote (§11.9.1), both limbs, pre-draft pass 08:27Z to 08:34Z

Limb one, price: 21 keys checked, one over 2%: December silver 54.341 to 52.92, -2.61%, with the lock’s own re-quote key corrected after the figures limb recomputed it; the copy carries both reads in every file that prints silver. ES +0.09%, NQ +0.28%, YM 0.00%, RTY +0.07% on the capture closes; December WTI +0.63% on its settlement, December Brent +0.48%, gold spot -0.49%, December gold -0.72%, bitcoin -0.46%, ether -0.49%, VIX -0.11%.

Limb two, distance to each threshold, both directions: NQ at -0.085% on settlement is 0.915 points from the 1.0% §8.5 trigger and 0.215 points below the 0.3% band floor; ES -0.023%, 0.977 from the trigger; YM +0.034%; RTY -0.089%. NQ crossed from inside the normal band to below it between the capture and the re-quote, a crossing the price limb cannot see; ES, YM and RTY were below the floor at both reads. A crossing of some kind has been found at every edition since the limb was added. VIX at 18.37 is 7.9 points of percentage short of the 8% leg in either direction. December WTI at +0.63% is 3.37 points short of the 4% leg. No threshold is within 0.5 points on any limb.

Pre-delivery pass 09:06Z to 09:13Z, both limbs. Limb one: 21 keys, one over 2%: December silver 54.341 to 53.075, -2.33%, still over the line after recovering from the 08:25Z read; the copy carries the settlement and the 08:25Z bar read labelled by its bar, and this later read is recorded here. Everything else inside 0.4%: ES +0.15% on the capture close, NQ +0.38%, December WTI +0.25% on its settlement, VIX 18.42. Limb two: on settlement ES +0.039%, NQ +0.008%, YM +0.118%, RTY +0.043%, all below the 0.3% band floor and 0.88 to 0.99 points short of the 1.0% §8.5 trigger; December WTI +0.25% on settlement, 3.75 short of the 4% leg; VIX +0.16% on the close, 7.84 short of the 8% leg. No crossing between the two passes on any limb except silver’s price, which crossed nothing.

Divergence flags

  1. Index up, NYSE down-volume share 55.29%, new lows above new highs on both exchanges. Third breadth measure (advance-decline count) agrees with the index. Spine.
  2. Dow gap-dominated (71.91%) against SPX and NDX intraday-dominated (69.82%, 70.23%). Second consecutive edition the Dow’s split inverts the other two.
  3. Energy +0.45% on a -1.46% barrel: opposite signs, third observation of the sector-against-front-month sign series (Thu opposite, Fri same, Mon opposite).
  4. High-yield OAS: the FRED page shows 338bp on 23 Oct, 340 on 22 Oct, 327 on 21 Oct; the ledger carries 297.81 and 287.23 for 22 and 21 Oct from a different route. Roughly 40bp apart on both dates. No level is published in any reader-facing file until the routes are reconciled; direction only.
  5. Dollar up on all four legs held with the US 2-year down 1bp.
  6. Silver -2.61% overnight with nothing stamped before it in the sampled feeds; gold spot -0.49% over the same window.
  7. VIX premarket: a 07:15Z global-hours bar exists (18.42) and later bars at 08:05Z to 08:15Z (18.37). The registry’s “permanent absence” entry is wrong, as the standing brief already says; the series has now been observed on more than one edition.

Carry-over note (§10.6)

Does not fire. No limb of §8.4.1 trips and no catalyst is flagged.

Forward catalyst slate

Tuesday: Consumer Confidence 14:00Z; Teradyne after the close (company release, two routes); UPS, Royal Caribbean, Coca-Cola, SoFi, S&P Global, Boeing, PayPal before the open on one calendar route; 5-year note auction per the calendar (not confirmed on the Treasury feed, which also lacks Monday’s 2-year). Wednesday: FOMC statement 18:00Z, press conference 18:30Z; Microsoft and Alphabet after the close (one route each); Brent December expiry is Friday. Thursday: Q3 GDP advance and September PCE 12:30Z; ECB 13:15Z; Amazon and Sandisk after the close (one route each); Strategy listed for 29 Oct on one route; 7-year note per the calendar. Friday: ECI; Daly 16:00Z and Musalem 16:30Z on a calendar only, the first post-blackout speakers if confirmed. Not this week: CPI (10 Nov), PPI (13 Nov); the October jobs report is not on the BLS October schedule.

Regime and sensitivity read (§17.3)

Weathervane carried unchanged; a session in which the long end eased 2bp whilst bills rose 5 runs against the heading in direction and within noise in size. Turn condition progress 0 of 2: no dated Fed communication exists in the blackout; DGS2 moved 1bp. Twenty-seventh consecutive non-advance. Candidate 8 (vol term structure): ratio 0.922 from 0.950, a 0.027 fall against a 0.070 condition, below 1.000, silent and correctly so. Candidate 9: gap shares 30.18% (SPX) and 71.91% (DJI), neither above 80%; both exchanges above 1.000, so limb two does not fire; zero fires. Candidate 6 (term premium without a policy move): bills up, long end down, no numeric threshold in the live file, unscoreable again. Sensitivity running LOOSE, forty-eighth consecutive edition, stated openly: the set reads instruments one at a time and today’s spine is an index against an exchange tape, which no candidate reads.

Retrieval and route notes

Twelve Data absent (connector needs reconnecting); TradingView substituted throughout. CMT first fetch returned the expected session; protocol run anyway, stale-first stands at 9 of the last 19. fiscaldata: no 26 Oct auction record, no 27 or 29 Oct coupon dates confirmed, 19 to 22 Oct rows carry null high_yield. FRED HY OAS via WebFetch disagrees with the ledger’s carried values by roughly 40bp on two dates (divergence flag 4). Farside: both 23 Oct rows now final; both 26 Oct rows unpopulated at 07:33Z; earliest row 7 Oct unchanged; asymmetry diagnostic returned evidence of incomplete capture on both products rather than NULL. VIX 5m series publishes global-hours bars from 07:15Z (observed again). Lane 3 called get-earnings-calendar once without a 429 and it caught a wrong reporter (UnitedHealth does not report 27 Oct); the blocklist entry is for four-agent concurrency and is unchanged. WebSearch with allowed_domains returns a proxy 400; wtop.com and apnews.com are robots-blocked; investing.com earnings calendar served only the 26 Oct section. ICE Brent feed ran ten to fifteen minutes behind CME on the re-quote. Two Stocktwits collisions fired (BULL, COMP.X) and were kept out; SKY.X and ANTHZZX.P (a private-company tracker) flagged unresolved and not used. Zero 429s across the run.
