479 Points Said Rally. 10 Stocks Turned Up.

The 2-year fell 6 basis points, the 20-year closed at 5.54%, and 93 issues made new lows

Ahoy there, Trader! ‍‍⚓️

It’s Phil…

479 Points and a Guest List of 10 The Dow threw a party, the 20-year stayed at 5.54%, and 93 issues went to a new low

Friday was, on the evidence of the front page, a rally. The Dow added 478.64 points. The S&P 500 closed up 0.51%. The VIX fell 5.11% to 14.87, which is the market announcing it has stopped worrying.

Underneath that, 10 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange made a 52-week high. Ten. Another 93 made a new low.

The machinery is less tidy than the tape. The durable goods release was mixed: the headline beat, core orders missed at 0.3% against 0.6%, and capital goods orders excluding aircraft beat at 1.6%. The front of the curve took a reprieve from it anyway and the 2-year fell 6 basis points to 4.81%. The long end, which has spent this month pricing money without the committee’s permission, declined. The 20-year closed 5.54%, the highest close of September.

So the relief was 6 basis points wide and it was spent entirely at the top of the market. Microsoft rose 3.663% and added 18.24 dollars of price to an index that weights by price, which is the sort of arithmetic that looks magnificent and employs nobody.

Then the weekend took the rest of it. Washington rejected Iran’s seven-day roadmap on Saturday, November crude trades 94.26 and the futures are handing Friday back. Talks are reported likely to resume this week anyway. Core PCE is Wednesday, and the 20-year has views.

The One That Mattered

  1. Not a percentage, not a level, a headcount. The Dow booked 478.64 points and 10 issues on the New York Stock Exchange finished at a 52-week high, against 93 at a new low. Breadth improved to 1.185, the index rose, the VIX fell, and all of that is true without being the market. A mixed durables print bought 6 basis points at the front. The 20-year took the money and closed at 5.54% anyway.

If only 10 stocks on the NYSE made a new high whilst the 20-year closed at the month’s highest, who exactly was that rally for? We went down the rabbit hole in today’s Macro Edge.

Stock Market Edge

The Long End Did Not Take the Hint 6 basis points at the front, 5.54% at the back, 93 new lows in between

Premarket snapshot:

December E-mini S&P futures trade 7,770.75 at the 07:30 UK capture, down 0.42% on Friday’s 7,803.75 settlement, Nasdaq futures 0.92% lower. The basis is 60.34, so the implied cash open is 7,710.41 and the unadjusted read has the sign wrong by 27.34 points.

Sector rotation:

Eight of eleven sectors rose and none of them enough to matter. Industrials led at 0.948%, technology 0.801%, financials 0.568%. Communication services was worst at 0.904% lower, led by Meta at 3.335% lower after a reported flaw in its assistant.

Earnings or guidance:

Costco printed 6.75 dollars a share on 93.9 billion of net sales, opened 1.06% lower at 887.00, fell to 883.10 and closed 922.765. The market called a 0.15 tariff refund suspect at the open and pardoned it by the close.

Cross-asset nuance:

The 2-year fell 6 basis points to 4.81%, the 20-year rose to 5.54%, and the two have stopped speaking. The dollar eased 0.21% to 101.034 on a move that was two-thirds yen. Gold spot trades 4,177.30, down 2.51%, a lot of conviction to mislay overnight.

Crypto Market Edge

Bitcoin Went First, As It Tends To Down 1.18% since Friday’s close whilst the worst index future managed 0.92%

Price snapshot:

Bitcoin closed the 25 September UTC mark at 84,070.52, down 0.3775%, after touring 83,159.52 to 85,221.78 and arriving back where it started. Ether closed 2,690.71, up 0.1254%. By the 07:30 UK mark they were 83,079.68 and 2,647.24, down 1.18% and 1.62% on those closes.

Flows and positioning:

Spot bitcoin funds took 134.5 million dollars on Friday: BlackRock 97.0, Fidelity 49.3, Bitwise out 11.8, everybody else a genuine zero. Wednesday’s famous collapse in demand has now settled at 346.9 million against the 32.4 million that was printed at the time.

Leadership and rotation:

Bitcoin led the Stocktwits crypto-only board at the 06:25 UTC capture, Sui and Hedera behind it. Ether was absent from both that board and the all-asset board at the same capture, whilst its message volume read normal and higher on the month. Rank is not attention.

Catalysts and roadmap:

Strategy files on a Monday and had filed nothing by the 07:30 UK check, which proves only that we looked early. Holdings stand at 846,000 bitcoin at 75,416. Core PCE prints Wednesday, payrolls Friday, and nobody has moved to revive the market-structure bill.

TL;DR

  • The Dow added 478.64 points and 10 NYSE issues made a 52-week high, against 93 new lows. The party had a guest list.
  • The durables release was mixed. The 2-year fell 6 basis points to 4.81% and the 20-year closed 5.54% anyway. Only one end of the curve listened.
  • Microsoft rose 3.663% and added 18.24 dollars of price to an index that weights by price. Breadth improved to 1.185 and explained nothing at all.
  • Washington rejected Iran’s Hormuz roadmap on Saturday. November crude trades 94.26, December futures 7,770.75, and talks are expected back this week.
  • Bitcoin is 83,079.68, down 1.18%, against Nasdaq futures 0.92% lower. Gold spot is 4,177.30, down 2.51%. Everything portable is being sold.

Fun Fact

The Dollar Index Has Not Changed Its Mind Since 1999 It still weights the Swedish krona and still ignores the Chinese yuan

The ICE US Dollar Index has carried the same six currencies at the same fixed weights since the euro replaced its constituent currencies in 1999. Sweden’s krona holds 4.2% of it. China, the world’s largest goods exporter, holds none of it whatsoever.
