NDX Trade Hits 92.98% – A Perfect Breakout Play

Ahoy there Trader! ‍‍⚓️

It’s Phil…

SPX may be the king of cash-settled options, but it’s not the only game in town.

The other indexes are starting to wake up, and I decided to test the waters on NDX (Nasdaq 100).

The result? A clean breakout, a fast move to target, and a 92.98% return. Simple, effective, and exactly how trading should be.

The only problem? NDX liquidity is still questionable at best, making fills a challenge. But when trades like this work, they work beautifully.

Let’s break it down.

Fun Fact

SPX may be the go-to for cash-settled options, but NDX is starting to gain traction. I decided to place a test trade—and while the setup worked perfectly, the real challenge was liquidity. Getting filled on NDX isn’t easy, and since this trade, I haven’t been able to execute another one—but that’s a story for another day.

The Trade Setup – Classic Range Breakout & Pullback

  • One of my 6 money-making patterns
  • A clean breakout from range highs
  • A textbook pullback to confirm the breakout level
  • Target projected based on the range height

With the setup in place, I executed a simple income trade, collecting $14.25 in credit on entry. The move played out perfectly, smashing through breakout targets within days for a fast directional push.

The Execution – Entry, Target, Exit

  • Trade placed with $14.25 credit collected
  • Fast breakout move → Trade exited for $1.00
  • Final return: 92.98%

This is how trading should be—get in, hit the target, get out. No messy adjustments, no over-management, just a clean setup and execution.

The Only Downside? Liquidity Issues
Despite this trade working flawlessly, getting filled on NDX remains a challenge. Since this trade, I haven’t been able to execute another one—which is frustrating, because I’d love to trade this index more often.

Final Takeaways:

  • NDX trades can be highly profitable when executed correctly
  • Breakout setups remain one of the strongest trading patterns
  • Liquidity remains an issue—so it’s not a replacement for SPX just yet

For now, I’ll keep watching for the next opportunity and hoping for better fills.

Happy trading,

Phil
